May the Poem Be Light for Us | final version

I was killed by the first stanza
it was worst extravaganza
I won't be by chorus revived
the rest had joyfully survived

they sing loudly and happily
clapping hands, staying merrily
I would awhile just brood
in case I misconstrued

but when I reached the punchline
I wept, being thrilled to my spine
I died, the poem fell on my head
covering me like earth the dead
