A Harrowing sight

I stand amidst others
In a "killing field"
Mass graves
Now craters
A hallowed space
Of a time gone by!

To stop
To think
To contemplate
Of the odious scourge
Of genocide!

Fissured skulls
Battered bones
Of young and old
Decapitated
Dehumanised
A glass-tomb exhibit
An act of national grief!

A silent tear
I shed at a slogan
That came to mind
'To spare you
Is no profit
To destroy you
Is no loss'
A distorted 'rural idyll'
Set to year zero
A scar of prejudice!l

For tortured souls
My heart did weep
As my thoughts turn
To honour
And light the darkness
Of those left behind
Shattered lives
Troubled minds!

Note from User Mahengonsal: This poignant poem was written by my good friend Roshan Asver in 2025 after visiting the Killing Fields in Cambodia. I thought it was worth sharing on this Poetry Forum
