The Pious Politician

He visits the Temple regularly
offers perfumed flowers piously
collecting merit for many a good deed
for a glorious after-life, guaranteed

Bends reverently with some difficulty
stanzas said with lips quivering slightly
Eyes shut, mutters, 'must lose weight"
fat hands clasped in prayer sedate

In his shiny Merc he is driven away
hordes of beggars block his way
"Please sir could you spare some cash"
So annoying these pitiful trash

Makes a note this dross must be evicted
Clean up this place so it will be respected
He walks into his big office importantly
Reads a memo on his big desk intently

A big smile adorns his face as he sits down
Must relax and sip whisky from Scottish town
His bribe has worked, the contract he has won
wheeling and dealing made him richer by the ton

Enough money to build that Buddha statue
his name inscribed in a plaque at the venue
"Must call the reporter about my donation,
my duty is it not, to broadcast my dedication"
