A walk in the hills

It happened some time ago
Five friends trudging in a vast open space
Hills and dales, valleys and meadows we trace
Proud and majestic hills surround us
Pale distant and darker closer ones

A restless stream twists and turns while flowing
A busy wide glistening ribbon towards us rushing
Narrower and narrower as we trace it back
Becoming a fine thread before disappearing
Up into the bosom of distant mysterious hills

And now as we gaze, in the distant sky we spot
A black swirling blanket, which first was just a dot
Closer and closer towards us moving fast
Continuously reshaping as we watch aghast
Then realisation dawns as we gaze in wonder
That this is but a group birds in flight yonder

They zoom in, and up above us fly
And into two streams they divide
as they rise and seem to part their ways
But rejoin and to the horizon fade
Once again, just a dot in the sky.

The unwelcome hand of a strong wind tries to push us back
Walking becomes harder but we still haven’t lost the knack
The howling wind dominates and drowns us
worrying thoughts fill us but we make no fuss
Conversation futile and we suffer in silence
Shivering in the setting gloom now so intense

Suddenly with little warning
The heavens open, sheets of rain strike our faces in pain
Our path becomes a blur behind a curtain of driving rain
We hold fast to our walking sticks and dig in to the earth
Progress now painful, difficult, the slowest all day
And Fear begins to grip us, have we lost our way.

Then as suddenly as it came our way
The rain stops and the haze clears away
A muddy but welcome grassy meadow revealed
As we struggle to focus our eyes and feel relieved
Behold our destination, now a short distance away
The puff of smoke from the lonely cottage chimney
Sending a welcome signal to us of warmth and safety
